Anfractuous Intro Devlog
//The Devlog
Anfractuous is a collaboration between choreographer Jennifer Salk and digital artist Martin Jarmick. There have been many phases / seasons of development for this project over the past 2 years and now we are in the final stage. We hope to use this devlog to share our progress as we wrap up the project this year.
//The Project
Anfractuous is an interactive dance media artwork that invites viewers to activate the choreography through choice and play. Similar to a game, the piece is experienced through a mobile device or computer. Video panels are arranged on the screen and display various angles, spaces and moving bodies. Audiences search for visual and sonic relationships between the videos. As correlations are found and the viewer progresses, dance film vignettes appear, and the overall form and meaning of the choreography manifests. Audiences engage multiple senses to author their own flow and order of the dance with each experience. Viewers will not have to have any prior game experience to navigate. The structure will inform them as they progress.
//Current state
Interestingly, Anfractuous was shown at a dance festival in Seattle in Dec 2022. Since the project is meant to be experienced on a screen, we created a version of Anfractuous to be projected on stage for the festival program - Jennifer Salk ran the piece from her laptop in the theater sound booth, interacting with the work to demonstrate the piece. This "theater" version of the work was built for Android and is the downloadable file on the itch.io project page.
Right now, the work is a relatively linear experience: you see a video, your click next, you see another video, you can go back, etc. We want to keep some linearity, but will be opening the options to the audience more. This new structure and progress will be iterated here on the devlog, so stay tuned!
